OPINION: How solar goes beyond emissions

Greenville News recently published an article on Solar energy’s benefits beyond emissions; written by the energy and state policy director of Upstate Forever, Shelley Robbins.

North Carolina Renewable Energy looks forward to a bright, sunny solar future in South Carolina.

Below is an excerpt from the article:

“Now that the SC Energy Freedom Act has passed, removing barriers to clean energy, let’s note the benefits of solar power that go beyond emissions. (…) They include protection from price volatility, generating local tax revenue without corresponding costs of service increases, and attracting high-caliber companies to South Carolina.

The price per unit of energy supplied by solar has only fallen, and as (battery) storage prices continue to fall, solar becomes more and more able to supply energy 24/7. The sun cannot be curtailed by corporations or governments. Thus, solar energy is not volatile – the price does not run the risk of rising dramatically.

Increasing South Carolina’s solar capacity must become a priority if we want to protect citizens and businesses from the risk associated with fossil fuel commodity prices, if we want to build county coffers without increasing expenses, and if we want to attract the best corporate partners to this state.”
